State Backtracks on Back Taxes |
By Mike Leggett, Austin American-Statesman
Things are tough all over. We know that. But a bunch of hunting and fishing outfitters were shocked recently when they got word of a potential unpaid sales tax liability that could run into the thousands of dollars, money some of them don't have and never knew they were supposed to be collecting in the first place.

Reducing Draw Weight Gets Mixed Reviews |
By RAY SASSER, The Dallas Morning News
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission voted in April to drop the minimum draw weight requirement for hunting bows. Beginning in September, deer and turkey hunters will no longer be required to shoot a bow with a draw weight of 40 pounds or more.
The change was made to encourage more bowhunting participation from women and youth hunters, or any men with physical problems that makes it hard for them to pull 40 pounds of resistance. Hopefully, say veteran bowhunters, the absence of a minimum draw weight will not encourage overzealous fathers to outfit elementary school kids with tiny tot archery sets and encourage them to launch arrows at deer, turkeys or other game. <more> |

| Ground-Breaking Lyme Disease Research Funded by EPA |
In the United States, Lyme disease is the most frequently reported disease that can be passed from animals to humans. These animal-borne diseases can make people extremely sick, and proper anticipation of disease outbreaks and effective intervention are crucial to protecting the public. Scientists at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y., recently received $750,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help safeguard human health by gaining a better understanding of the Lyme disease life cycle.
“Most people overlook the possibility of acquiring Lyme disease or other tick- and insect-transmitted diseases,” said EPA Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg. “Certain areas here in New York, however, have among the highest incident rates of Lyme disease in the United States.” <more> |

| Deer Breeding Goes to School |
As campuses across Texas come to life this fall, the Texas Deer Association will be there to help educate students on the benefits of a career in deer breeding and deer management. The TDA will be attending several college campuses this fall for various ‘Career Fairs’ to recruit individuals into the wildlife and veterinary fields and give them an opportunity to learn what the deer industry is all about.
TDA’s Back to School Schedule includes:
Sept 16 — Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas
Oct 1 & 2 — TAMU, College Station, Texas
Oct 7 — TAMU Kingsville, Kingsville, Texas
The TDA will also be presenting students with jobs available through TDA members and TDA member-owned ranches. If you are currently offering employment — full-time, part-time, internships, or seasonal positions — and you would like for TDA to promote your open job opportunity at universities as well as the TDA website, please e-mail your job listing to Lisa Wallgren, Region 3 Secretary/Treasurer at 325.242.1488 or email lisaleigh_sweetwater@yahoo.com. |

Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioners recently rejected an offer from the federal government for department land sought for construction of a border fence. The federal government wants to acquire part of the Anacua Unit within TPWD’s Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area, however, TPWD officials are concerned that a fence along the Rio Grande would disrupt the flow of wildlife between Texas and Mexico. Commissioners commented they understand the need for border security, but would like to see wildlife-friendly alternative. <more> |
